Art Institute of Chicago and Beyond

The research has been going well in Chicago so far this week. On Tuesday I spent time looking through artist files at the Art Institute of Chicago. Wednesday and Thursday were fun for me as I spent time researching the various artists and cities we are considering.

I am finding some new artists, and I have become very interested in learning more about some of them, including Manierre Dawson, Anthony Angarola, and Walter Ellison. It is going to be very hard to narrow the selections down.

Visit to West Bend, WI

Monday, May 18, 2009

Today I drove to West Bend, Wisconsin to visit the West Bend/Wisconsin Art Museum. I met with Linda, the archivist, and looked at modernist Wisconsin painters. It was an enjoyable trip, and I uncovered some new artists to consider for the exhibition. The drive from Chicago was nice, and the landscape in Wisconsin absolutely gorgeous.

A special thanks to Linda and the other staff at the museum for their generosity and kindness.

The Research Begins

The exhibition on Modernism in the Midwest will incorporate approximately 50-60 works by artists who lived, worked and painted in the Midwest between the years 1893-1945. While the title of the exhibition hasn't been decided on, a long list of potential artists are being considered for inclusion. Next week I will be visiting the Chicago area to begin researching and looking at paintings.
